Plan Your Trip

We know that you’re excited and eager to get out on the Vermilion River – we are excited for you too! Before you go, there are a few things to consider. This page will help you to plan your trip and ensure that you have the best experience possible. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions as you prepare!

Please note: Vermilion River Adventures is not liable or responsible for any personal items that may get lost or damaged while enjoying the river. Please keep in mind that you will be in motion while in close proximity to the water, and you and your items will likely get wet. Smartphones, cameras, and other electronics should be placed and kept in waterproof bags or containers whenever possible. These are available for a small additional rental fee.

Personal Gear

  • Clothing: Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Wear quick-drying clothes and avoid cotton. Bring an extra set of clothes in a waterproof bag.
  • Water Shoes: Footwear that can get wet and provide good grip on slippery surfaces. Sandals / flip-flops don’t count.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat to protect against sunburn.
  • Gloves: Paddling gloves can help prevent blisters and protect your hands.

Safety Equipment

Vermilion River Adventures has you covered here – all guests will be fitted with proper personal flotation device (PFD) before departure. All watercraft are equipped with a first aid kit as well as a compass and a whistle or air horn. Please see our Boater Safety page for additional information.

Navigation and Planning

  • Map: Even if you plan to use a smartphone or GPS device, having a backup is recommended, especially for those not familiar with the river or area.
  • Itinerary: Leave a plan with someone not going on the trip, including your route, expected return time, and how to contact us if you don’t check in.

Food and Water

  • Water and Hydration System: Enough water for the entire trip, plus a little extra. We strongly encourage a wearable water dispenser and/or reusable water bottle, as opposed to disposable bottles. Having an adequate water supply is especially important for the float trip from McDowell to Pontiac, because you will be on the river, in the sun for an extended period of time, with nowhere to stop and get a refill on fresh (drinking) water.
  • Snacks and Meals: High-energy, easy-to-pack foods like nuts, granola bars, and sandwiches.

Miscellaneous

  • Dry Bags: For keeping personal items and electronics dry.
  • Insect Repellent: Especially important in the early morning or late evening.
  • Personal First Aid Kit: As noted above, each watercraft is equipped with a standard first aid kit, but consider bringing additional personal items like prescription medications, insect sting relief, and personal hygiene items.
  • Repair Kit: Duct tape and a multi-tool can address any minor issues that may arise while on the water.
  • Camera or Smartphone: For capturing memories, preferably waterproof or in a waterproof case.

Precautions and Preparations

  • Skill Preparation: If you’re a beginner, consider taking a kayaking course or practicing with an experienced kayaker. If you’d like one of us to be your paddle buddy, please let us know at the time of booking to ensure our availability according to the details of your trip.
  • Check Weather and Water Conditions: Before you head out, know the weather forecast and water conditions.
  • Understand the Route: Be familiar with the route you plan to take, including potential hazards and landing spots. We will alert you to any known hazards at the time of your departure. Please keep in mind that the Vermilion is a small yet constantly changing river. The woods along the river result in a lot of deadfall at times, and occasionally, long-submerged trees suddenly appear where they previously had not been visible above water. Please exercise caution when near any hazards or objects protruding from the surface of the water. Please also avoid the dam that is downstream / to the west of the Play Park boat ramp.
  • Warm-Up: Do some physical warm-up exercises before you start paddling to prevent muscle injuries.
  • Medical Conditions: Please consult your physician if you have any medical conditions that might affect you while out on the water.
  • Safety Preparation: Familiarize yourself with the Boater Safety page prior to your trip.

Environmental Considerations

  • Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash and minimize your impact on the natural environment. We cannot stress this enough – PLEASE DO NOT LITTER! Keep the Vermilion River beautiful and enjoyable for everyone!
  • Be Wildlife Aware: Understand how to behave around wildlife you might encounter.

Fishing – Additional Considerations

If you’re joining us for a chartered fishing trip or plan to fish from your canoe or kayak, here are some things you’ll want to bring.

  • Fishing License: Ensure you have a valid fishing license for the area you plan to fish in. Licenses can often be purchased online through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, for both residents and non-residents.
  • Fishing Rods and Reels: A lightweight and durable rod and reel combo is especially suitable for kayak fishing.
  • Tackle Box: Include a variety of hooks, lures, sinkers, swivels, and bobbers specific to the fish species you are targeting.
  • Fishing Line: Spare fishing line in case of snags or line breakage.
  • Bait: Live or artificial bait, depending on your preference.
  • Fish Grips and Net: To safely handle and land fish. A net is especially useful in a kayak.
  • Pliers and Scissors: For cutting line, removing hooks, and other tasks.
  • Measuring Device: To ensure caught fish meet local size regulations if you plan to keep them.
  • Fishing Knife: For cutting bait or cleaning fish.
  • Bucket or Live Well: For keeping bait alive or storing your catch, if you plan to keep fish (though we at VRA are supporters of catch and release fishing).
